Rumors of Randy Moss’ cancer diagnosis made waves across the Internet last week. On Monday night, the Minnesota Vikings honored Moss ahead of their matchup against the Chicago Bears—shortly after Moss confirmed his diagnosis.

After the pregame coin toss, Jake Reed and Cris Carter walked onto the field holding up Moss’ number—the number 84 jersey. Vikings legends themselves, Reed, Carter, and Moss are affectionately known as “Three Deep,” one of the most famous receiver trios in NFL history.

As Reed and Carter made their way across the field, Vikings fans roared in support of Moss. “In honor of Randy Moss and all those fighting cancer, let’s Moss cancer,” the in-stadium announcer said.

Love and encouragement towards Moss remained the theme of the night. Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson paid homage to the former wide receiver after scoring an early touchdown.

“We love you Randy! That’s for you!” he yelled to the camera as he formed a heart with his hands.

Fans began to speculate about Moss’ health issues after he appeared on NFL Countdown with yellowed eyes last month. Shortly after, he addressed the elephant in the room, saying he’s been battling something internal—but that he’s going to get through it.

“I just ask for all the prayer warriors to put their blessing hands on me and my family through these hard times,” the NFL Hall of Famer said.

Days later, it was announced that Moss would step away from his broadcasting role at ESPN to “focus on a personal health challenge.”

“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, consistently elevating Countdown with his insight and passion. He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready,” ESPN said in its official statement.

Last Friday, Moss officially announced his cancer diagnosis. He appeared in an Instagram live video with a cane and hospital bands, sharing that he is a cancer survivor.

Following a Thanksgiving day surgery to put a stent on his liver, Moss underwent a 6-hour whipple procedure to remove the cancer. He was hospitalized for six days and released on Friday—the same day he shared the video.

Moss said a cancerous mass was found in his bile duct, between his pancreas and liver. As part of his treatment, Moss will undergo radiation and chemotherapy.

“I am a cancer survivor. Some trying times, but we made it through. I didn’t think I would ever be in a position like this, as healthy as I thought I was,” Moss shares in the video.

The Rock’s Diet and Workout Plan

0

By Jacob Osborn from Many of men

For Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, workouts and a diligent diet are quite simply a way of life. Accordingly, the California-born college athlete turned WWE sensation turned A-list movie star cuts a truly impressive figure, as anyone with working eyeballs and access to a screen can attest. And while some of that mean muscle came naturally, the bulk of it results from next-level dedication in every conceivable department. That said, he still makes room for the occasional cheat day. Something tells us he earned it.

It’s then no surprise that adopting The Rock diet and workout plan isn’t a matter of access as much as it is a matter of conviction. Well, that and a decent budget, since you’ll be spending a lot on food. Should you take on this training regimen, however, you might one day flaunt a body like the one he did in “Hercules” or “Fast 5” or any other movie he’s been in because he’s pretty much always fit. But are you up to the task, young go-getter? Let’s find out.

The Rock Diet Plan

Meanwhile, Johnson is always happy to share the secrets of his ongoing success. As such, you’ll always find him posting fitness videos to YouTube or selling The Rock workout gear or gracing Instagram with pictures of his hearty meals. He even launched two short-lived reality shows called “Hero” and “Wake Up Call,” where he personally motivated others toward physical and mental transformation. Like we said, spreading the love is a massive part of his game plan.

More recently, Johnson dieted hard for his role in Black Adam, revealing the intense depths he goes to for his ‘champion’ scenes. “Been working extremely hard dieting, training and conditioning unlike any other role of my entire career,” he wrote on Instagram. “Manipulating water, sodium, cardio but also having to push and pull real iron to have dense, dry, detailed muscle. It’s a real science that takes months and months to dial it all in with my strength & conditioning coach @daverienzi who keeps a very watchful eye, constantly fine tuning our strategy daily.”

The Rock takes a “go big or go home” attitude toward just about everything he does, including his diet. What we’re trying to say here is that he eats like a grizzly bear, albeit a (mostly) healthy one.

Sometimes The Rock’s diet can go to crazy extremes. For example, when prepping for the role of Hercules, it was reported that he ate up to seven protein-rich meals a day. That amounted to a whopping total of 4,131 calories, which is basically twice the recommended average for men. When not in training, he normally eats about five meals a day, and we’re talking meals.

As you can probably guess, Johnson loves himself a juicy steak along with other tasty proteins. And if you’ve ever visited The Rock’s insanely popular Instagram feed, then you know his cheat meals are downright epic. Of course, everything this dude does is epic, so why would his cheat meals be any exception?

Think steak, fish, whole grains, eggs, green veggies, protein, protein, and more protein, and you’re getting a pretty good idea of what The Rock is cookin’. It’s all planned out in advance and devoured with relish.

Five-Meal Diet Plan

When he’s not building mass for a role, The Rock eats the following (as an example):

Meal #1

  • 10 oz steak
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 glass watermelon juice

Meal #2

  • 2 servings chicken
  • 2 bell peppers
  • 3 cups mushrooms
  • 3 cups broccoli
  • 1 protein shake

Meal #3

  • 8 oz salmon
  • 8 asparagus tips
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 2 cups rice medley
  • 3 cups broccoli

Meal #4

  • 10 oz steak
  • 3 baked potatoes
  • 8 asparagus tips
  • 1 glass orange juice

Meal #5

  • 20 grams casein protein
  • 10 egg whites
The Rock Reveals Ridiculous Diet for 'Cheat Days'

Seven-Meal Diet Plan

As we mentioned above, when The Rock was training for 2014’s “Hercules,” he consumed calories like it was nobody’s business. For all the extremists (or completists) out there, here’s one of his seven-meal diet plans:

Meal #1

  • 10 oz cod
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 2 cups of oatmeal

Meal #2

  • 8 oz cod
  • 12 oz sweet potato
  • 1 cup veggies

Meal #3

  • 8 oz chicken
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 1 cup veggies

Meal #4

  • 8 oz cod
  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 cup veggies
  • 1 tbsp fish oil—122

Meal #5

  • 8 oz steak
  • 12 oz baked potato
  • spinach salad

Meal #6

  • 10 oz cod
  • 2 cups rice
  • salad

Meal #7

  • 30 grams casein protein
  • 10 egg-white omelet
  • 1 cup veggies (onions, peppers, mushrooms)
  • 1 tbsp omega-3 fish oil

The Rock Workout Plan

Are you ready to bring out your inner Hercules? The Rock workout plan will certainly get you there, but don’t think for a second that the journey will be easy. On the contrary, The Rock workout routine is pretty much as demanding as modern fitness can get. Of course, should you properly execute this brutal training regimen, you’ll be walking tall like a one-man gun show (who out there got the reference?).

Depending on the type of role he’s training for, The Rock employs varying levels of intensity. That said, his workout routine is always pretty intense. It kicks off with 30-50 minutes of cardio on the elliptical cross trainer first thing in the morning. After that, he eats a hearty, protein-packed breakfast.

Then it’s off to the gym, where the real workout begins. In The Rock’s own words, he gets “busy with a nice session of clangin’ and bangin’—epic pain, epic results.” That means lifting heavy weights on a regular basis, working out six days a week, and focusing on a different muscle group each day. All the while, The Rock is cranking his ultimate music playlist, presumably on his namesake headphones or earbuds. On the seventh day, he rests…and eats gobs of ice cream (if his legendary Instagram feed is anything to go by).

Before we dive into the basics, a simple reminder: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is 6 foot 5 and built like a truck. We only mention this because we would never want you to bite off more than you can chew by eating everything he eats and lifting everything he lifts. In other words, apply a little common sense when adopting The Rock’s workout routine, so that we don’t end up with a lawsuit on our hands. Intensity is good. Overdoing it, bad.

Now that we’ve gotten our little disclaimer out of the way, we present one of The Rock’s ultimate workout plans. Prepare to get busy with the kettlebells, barbells, and dumbbells exercises. Your triceps will be sore, your legs with be sore, and everything will be sore, but it will be worth it in the long run. Epic pain, epic results, as the man himself likes to say. Without further delay, here is The Rock’s workout plan:

Best Expensive Fragrances for Men at a Glance

Highlights from our list include the following:

  • Best overall: Althaïr by Parfums de Marly
  • For longevity: The Moon by Frederic Malle
  • For value for money: Bal d’Afrique by Byredo
  • For wearing every day: Terre d’Hermes Eau Givree by Hermes
Althair by parfums de marly 2
Althaïr by Parfums de Marly | Image: Parfums de Marly

1. Althaïr by Parfums de Marly

Price: from AU$498

Pros Cons
Outstanding buttery, caramel, and vanilla notes with a touch of orange and citrus on dry down. One of the longest-lasting expensive fragrances for men that we’ve tested with 8+ hours on skin and even more on clothes. While we never found this to be an issue, some reviews online find the vanilla to be quite synthetic and a little offensive with such a strong projection. We don’t find it an issue.

We’ve been wearing Althaïr by Parfums de Marly for the last few months and have fallen in love with this expensive cologne’s buttery vanilla and caramel notes. Some reviews online point to it being a little synthetic in its vanilla scent, but this was never an issue for us because it smells so good. Longevity is outstanding at 8+ hours with 2-3 sprays onto skin and even more on clothes. Projection is very strong until it dries down on the skin so be warned, but once it does you’re welcomed by a little citrus thanks to the Orange Blossom Absolute and plenty of musk with wood. It’s a must-have luxury scent for every guy’s collection.

Top notes: Cinnamon, Cardamom, Orange Blossom and Bergamot
Middles notes: Bourbon Vanilla and Elemi
Base notes: Praline, Musk, Ambroxan and Guaiac Wood

Editions de parfums by frederic malle
The Moon by Frederic Malle | Image: Frederic Malle

2. The Moon by Frederic Malle

Price: from AU$1,265

Pros Cons
Explosive fruit scents on the first spray before leather, musk, wood, and smoke start to push through as the scent dries down and layers pull back. Longevity that seems to last forever and projection that’s beautifully obnoxious. This is a very ‘in your face’ fragrance that suits a very successful person with a dominating presence. Not for the faint of heart, everyone will know you’re wearing something special so expect compliments and attention.

You asked for the best expensive colognes for men and we’re delivering with this outstanding, luxurious scent by Julien Rasquinet for Frederic Malle. If Creed Royal Oud is a Rolls-Royce then The Moon is a Koenigsegg. It’s like nothing you’ve smelt before with a raspberry and lychee explosion that dries down quickly and makes way for a funky oud. After a few minutes on the skin, the base notes come through with plenty of sexy musk, smoke, leather, and sandalwood. Longevity is outstanding as expected from this luxury option at 8+ hours, but what we’re most impressed with is how the scent continues to pull back layer after layer as you move around during the day. One of the best we’ve ever tested.

Top notes: Raspberry, Litchi and Saffron
Middles notes: Turkish Rose, Red Berries, Olibanum, Red Currant and Violet
Base notes: Agarwood (Oud), Leather, Patchouli, Amber and Sandalwood

Bal dafrique by byredo
Bal d’Afrique by Byredo | Image: Byredo

3. Bal d’Afrique by Byredo

Price: from AU$260

Pros Cons
Fresh, crisp, and sunny this is typical Byredo and perfect for everyday wear. The price makes it one of the best value-for-money expensive colognes on our list and with good longevity and a unique smell, get ready for plenty of compliments during warmer months. It’s a floral and soapy unisex scent with violet and jasmine so not a great blind buy option for a ‘blokey’ man who prefers leather, musk, and oud. Longevity is good, but not excellent.

One of the more affordable ‘expensive’ fragrances on our list, Bal d’Afrique by Byredo is the perfect ‘clean white t-shirt’ fragrance with a crisp and fresh scent that’s typical of this brand. It’s unisex and a little soapy and floral, so not something that we’d recommend blind buying. Longevity is surprisingly good for a freshie, lasting 4-6 hours on skin and more on clothes. It dries down with a hint of cedar and some reviewers online noted a little vetiver, but we couldn’t find that in our testing.

Top notes: Amalfi Lemon, Tagetes, Black Currant, Bergamot and African Orange Flower
Middles notes: Violet, Cyclamen and Jasmine
Base notes: Vetiver, Musk, Amber and Virginia Cedar

Best expensive perfumes for men angels share by kilian
Angels’ Share By Kilian | Image: Kilian

4. Angels’ Share by Kilian

Price: from AU$340

Pros Cons
Like pulling an apple pie out of a wood-fired oven, this is the perfect expensive scent for colder months and a man who likes whisky and the finer things in life. Performance is great with longevity of 6-8 hours and only a few top-up sprays required throughout the day. It’s a mature fragrance and we wouldn’t recommend buying this for an adolescent man or teenager. You’ll only want to wear this if you’re a professional in your field and want to make a big first impression.

Luxurious with notes of cognac and whisky, these are perfectly balanced by spicy cinnamon, vanilla, and wood. The perfect expensive choice for a Renaissance-type man who likes fine watches, cigars, and a glass of whisky but doesn’t mind showing his feminine side from time to time. Don’t mistake it for a typical boozy scent because it’s lively and dries down like an apple pie that’s just been pulled out of the oven. Longevity is great at 6-8 hours on skin and more on clothes while good projection requires only 2-3 sprays.

Top notes: Cognac
Middles notes: Cinnamon, Tonka Bean and Oak
Base notes: Praline, Vanilla and Sandalwood

Terre dhermes eau givree by hermes
Terre d’Hermes Eau Givree by Hermes | Image: Hermes

5. Terre d’Hermes Eau Givree by Hermes

Price: from AU$160

Pros Cons
Very cost-effective with good projection and longevity of 4-6 hours. One reviewer online called it a “not so serious version of the original Terre d’Hermes EDT” and we have to agree here, the citrusy, sour, and bitter notes are less in your face and more suited for daily wear. It’s an excellent casual-wearing fragrance, but not the best option if you’re looking for something serious for formal occasions. Also not the longest lasting option we’ve tried on this list.

Beautifully bitter, sour, citrusy, and very refreshing, this isn’t the most expensive fragrance for men, but it’s a top performer and one that we had to include on this list because we know you’ll want it. Great for office wear, it’s unique enough but doesn’t stand out to the point of being obnoxious and headache-inducing. In terms of performance, you get plenty of bang for your buck here with 4-6 hours on skin and slightly more on clothes in our testing. You can get significantly better performance from the likes of Creed, Parfums de Marly, and Frederic Malle, but you can find bottles of Terre d’Hermes Eau Givree for under AU$200!

Top notes: Citron
Middles notes: Juniper Berries and Timur
Base notes: Woody Notes and Mineral notes

Ganymede marc antoine barrois best expensive fragrances
Ganymede by Marc-Antoine Barrois | Image: Marc-Antoine Barrois

6. Ganymede by Marc-Antoine Barrois

Price: from AU$325

Pros Cons
This fragrance is truly one of a kind. It’s the white whale of the fragrance industry that’s been described by many reviewers online as nothing short of a “modern masterpiece”. We love its fresh and metallic scent with outstanding longevity of 8-10 hours on skin and more on clothes in our testing. If you like the sweetness from Baccarat Rouge 540 it’s almost completely absent here, replaced by a minerality that’s not for everyone. In saying that, we much prefer this over BC540.

If you love Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian but you’re sick of smelling like every other person, check out this fresh option from Marc-Antoine Barrois. It’s a tough fragrance to describe because it’s so complex and niche, but think fresh, metallic, and sour rolled into one. One reviewer online described it as ‘fresh printer paper,’ and we tend to agree. It’s very masculine leaning, the woody undertones help with performance, and there’s even a little lemon zest through the top notes. We only sprayed 2-3 on the skin because the projection is very strong and found outstanding longevity of 6+ hours.

Top notes: Mandarina from Italy, Essence Heart Orpur, Safran
Middles notes: Violet, Chinese osmanthus absolute Orpur
Base notes: Akigalawood and Immortelle absolute

Tom ford noir extreme parfum
Noir Extreme by Tom Ford | Image: Tom Ford

7. Noir Extreme by Tom Ford

Price: from AU$310

Pros Cons
One of the best options for an older man who prefers to wear masculine scents all year around. Fruity on first spray, but dries down to a lovely blend of vanilla, wood, and a little spice. For the amount of money you pay, it doesn’t have great performance and our tests found longevity at under 6 hours. Also not a great option for younger men, very serious.

Like most Tom Ford fragrances this is an expensive, sexy, and masculine scent that dries down to reveal vanilla, leather, and wood. The opening is pungent and fruity with plenty of zest through the top notes. As such, we don’t think this is one for every man and we recommend testing this in-store before blind buying online. If you prefer to wear suede-style fragrances in winter then this is a great option and something that you’ll want to have in your collection alongside a freshie, spice-bomb, and lavender option.

Top notes: Cardamom, Ginger, Mandarin Orange, Neroli and Citruses
Middles notes: Kulfi, Bulgarian Rose, Orange Blossom and Jasmine
Base notes: Vanilla, Leather, Suede, Amber, Tonka Bean, Guaiac Wood and Cedar

Royal oud by creed
Royal Oud by Creed | Image: Creed

8. Royal Oud by Creed

Price: from AU$539

Pros Cons
Universally liked. This is one of the best creamy, chocolatey, and peppery fragrances money can buy. It does lean a little ‘fresh’ as it dries down, but still a great option for mature men. Projection is great for the first few hours but fades quickly. Look for an older release if you can (2011-2016). Reviews online found the new bottles to have average longevity and our tests confirmed this. Expect a maximum of 6 hours on skin and slightly more on clothes. That’s not great for the amount of money you pay.

One of our favourite expensive fragrances for men who want to feel sophisticated and a little old-fashioned, Royal Oud by Creed is universally loved for a reason. On the first spray, you’ll be slightly overwhelmed by spicy ginger, cedar, and musk before it dries down into a delicious bar of creamy chocolate. We found the longevity to be slightly underwhelming at 4 hours and reviews online back this up. New bottles (like the one we tested) only last hours on the skin compared to older bottles that have longevity upwards of 10 hours.

Top notes: Pink Pepper, Lemon and Sicilian Bergamot
Middles notes: Cedar, Angelica and Galbanum
Base notes: Sandalwood, Agarwood (Oud) and Musk

Grand soir by maison francis kurkdjian
Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian | Image: Maison Francis Kurkdjian

9. Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Price: from AU$540

Pros Cons
Spicy amber and sweet vanilla undertones coax your nostrils, but it’s the musky, tonka dry-down that has us coming back for more here. Longevity is also exceptional at 6-10 hours and we’d expect nothing less from one of the greatest houses in perfumery. Again, it’s spicy and full of amber so be warned if these aren’t to your liking. Projection is also very strong so wear with caution. Probably not the best option for daily wear, save for special occasions.

Hello amber! Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian hits you with a combination of vanilla, amber, and dusty wood on the first spray before it dries down into a mix of powder and musk. It’s intoxicating with balanced sweetness and spice thanks to the orange zet top notes, but we’ve also found a little lavender in our testing. Performance is outstanding with strong projection, moderate sillage, and longevity that lasts 6-10 hours depending on skin type and weather conditions. A stellar addition to any man’s collection.

Top notes: Labdanum cistus, Orange
Middles notes: Benjoin siam
Base notes: Amber, Cedar, Musk, Tonka, Vanilla

Atkinson james in hand
James by Atkinsons | Image: Ben McKimm / Man of Many

10. James by Atkinsons

Price: from AU$280

Pros Cons
Very powerful, musky, and heavy with a slight hint of lime. Not a great option for wearing every day, but a fantastic option for standing out at special events and occasions. Also very well priced compared to other options on our list. Not a great option if you’re looking fro something with longevity. Our tests found this one only lasts 4 hours on skin and slightly more on clothes. Top-ups required.

While it’s far from the most expensive fragrance on our list, James by Atkinsons has quickly become a favourite of ours due to its clever balance of staple aromatics. On the first spray, you’ll be hit with vanilla and wood before vetiver and musk take over. Priced under $300 AUD, it’s an affordable option that we’d happily wear every day. If you like Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum it’s a great alternative that stays in the same ballpark.

Top notes: Clary Sage, Bergamot, Finger Lime and Pink Pepper
Middle notes: Violet Leaf, Elemi Resin and White Flowers
Base notes: Vetiver, Patchouli, Akigalawood and Musk

Best luxury perfumes and fragrances for men penhaligon the inimitable william penhaligon
The Inimitable William Penhaligon by Penhaligons | Image: Penhaligons

11. The Inimitable William Penhaligon by Penhaligons

Price: from AU$445

Pros Cons
If you want an expensive perfume for men that oozes ‘royalty’ look no further, The Inimitable William Penhaligon is the choice of the Royal Family. We love the warmth from wood and vetiver that’s balanced by the bergamot and jasmine. Performance is good but not great compared to other scents at this price point. We marked longevity at 4 hours on skin and projection requiring 4-5 sprays.

There’s a reason The Inimitable William Penhaligon is the choice of the Royal Family, it’s expensive, irresistible, and balanced. We instantly found the dashes of bergamot and jasmine on the first spray before they were overtaken by woody cedar, incense and vetiver towards the middle and base. Like any great masculine fragrance, there’s plenty of warmth thanks to the sandalwood. However, the ambroxan is a ‘love it or hate it’ scent. Performance is good but not great with our test showing 4 hours on skin and significantly more on clothes at 6+ hours. Projection and sillage follow suit and you’ll want to spray 4-5 times.

Top notes: Bergamot and Jasmine
Middle notes: Vetiver, Incense and Cedar
Base notes: Sandalwood and Ambroxan

Best luxury perfumes and fragrances for men le labo santal 33
Santal 33 by Le Labo | Image: Le Labo

12. Santal 33 by Le Labo

Price: from AU$488

Pros Cons
It’s become one of the most popular fragrances in the world and has garnered quite a lot of unjust hate online. We LOVE this scent and the balance of woody furniture, old leather, and even a little dill pickle. Performance is good and we get plenty of compliments. What was once a unique, niche scent has become so popular it’s unbearable for some. Reviews online found notes of dill pickle offensive, but we couldn’t smell this in our testing. Performance is good, but not great.

This unisex fragrance often fills our office with its intoxicating blends of wood, spices and leather. Described by the brand as “an open fire with a soft drift of smoke” we found the leather note particularly dominant and almost impossible to replicate. Warm, musky and addictive, the scent has managed to carve out a niche on its way to becoming one of the most popular scents in the world. Performance is long-lasting and our tests showed 6+ hours on skin and more on clothes. Projection is also great although it fades rather quickly after drying down. If you don’t like this, try Another 13 by Le Labo!

Best luxury perfumes and fragrances for men maison francis kurkdjian baccarat rouge 540
Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian | Image: Maison Francis Kurkdjian

13. Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Price: from AU$369

Pros Cons
Overhated, somewhat overrated, but still very luxurious and one of the best expensive fragrances for men. Very sweet and balanced by amber wood, ambergris and spicy saffron. Don’t expect to standout anymore, however, that shouldn’t stop you from trying. Popular, very popular. Performance is good, but not great with up to 6 hours on skin and more on clothes. The amber and spice doesn’t quite balance out the excessive sweetness.

Undoubtedly one of the most popular fragrances in the world right now, Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian is expensive, but that hasn’t stopped everyone from buying a bottle to just get a whiff of this addictive smell. You’ll find distinctive sweet notes balanced by amber wood, ambergris and spicy saffron. Longevity is good, but not great at 6 hours on the skin and slightly more on clothes.

Top notes: Jasmine and Saffron
Middle notes: Amberwood and Ambergris
Base notes:  Fir resin and Cedar

Best luxury perfumes and fragrances for men creed aventus
Aventus by Creed | Image: Creed

14. Aventus by Creed

Price: from AU$369

Pros Cons
Classic by any stretch of the imagination, Aventus has defined what a ‘successful’ man has looked like for years. What was once a fairly niche fragrance is now popular and mainstream, however, that hasn’t stopped our appreciation for the blackcurrant, Italian bergamot, French apples, and musky undertones. Like BC540 it’s extremely popular and a little obnoxious in its projection. Performance is good, but not great, with 6 hours on skin and a little more on clothes. If you’re looking for something niche, look elsewhere these days e.g. Parfums de Marly.

Expensive and niche, Aventus is the most popular Creed fragrance ever created and celebrates strength, power, and success. It makes sense then that many online reviews point to this being a great option for business professionals, real estate agents, and sales executives. Every bottle is filled with high-quality ingredients and we found the musk and oak base notes to be a standout with plenty of longevity. Top notes are equally as enticing with blackcurrant, Italian Bergamot, French apples and a burst of pineapple.

Top notes: Pineapple, Bergamot, Black Currant and Apple
Middle notes: Birch, Patchouli, Moroccan Jasmine and Rose
Base notes: Musk, Oakmoss, Ambergris and Vanille

Best luxury perfumes and fragrances for men maison martin margiela jazz club

Jazz Club by Maison Martin Margiela | Image: Maison Martin Margiela

15. Jazz Club by Maison Margiela

Price: from AU$215

Pros Cons
Affordable, smoky, and masculine, this is a smell that could define your whole personality. Try it on your skin and transport yourself to a dusty music store or underground cocktail bar where they serve the best Scotch whisky. Masculine as it gets. Quite smoky and masculine. Not a great option for the younger lads amongst us. Performance is as expected for this price point and won’t blow you away at 6 hours on clothes and less on skin.

Here’s another long-lasting, luxury cologne that brings affordability to the expensive perfumes for men category. Jazz Club by Maison Margiela is all about tobacco, leaf to be specific, with a smoky blend of lemon, pink pepper, styrax and neroli. The result is a warm, sharp, spicy cologne that stays its course the whole day thanks to the increased use of exotic oils. We found longevity to be around 4 hours on the skin and 6 hours on clothes which is about average for scents around this price point. Sillage and projection are good and you’d expect to spray 4-5 times on average with top-ups throughout the day.

Top notes: Pink Pepper, Neroli and Lemon
Middle notes: Clary Sage and Java Vetiver Oil
Base notes: Tobacco Leaf, Vanilla Bean and Styrax

Louis Vuitton Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 by Pharrell Williams

0

For his best Louis Vuitton collection to date, Pharrell Williams showed Paris the roots of the American Western wardrobe with nods to Japanese workwear, BODE, and Ralph Lauren in the process. Denim with pearl-and-sequin embroideries, gunmetal-washed, sun-tattered looks, and printed Western floral motifs, the collection follows teasers on his Skateboard Instagram page and a spectacle-worthy Pre-Fall 2024 showing in Hong Kong.

We also love the choice to collaborate with workwear icon Timberland, whose work boots are reimagined in wheat or black nubuck with debossed LV Monograms, a size increase of 15 per cent, and an Italian-made construction. Of course, there’s a highly limited version with real gold eyelets and tongue pendants carried in Monogram canvas and plexiglass shoe trunks. Timb-heads will note they’re all finished on XL soles.

Following the Millionaire Speedy featured on our list of the best fashion releases of 2023, Pharrell debuts his new heat-moulded handle bag. The most famous LV piece of all returns in new form as a studded saddle bag along with the Saumur, Steamer (in three sizes), and Pochette Accessories XL.

Highlights from tailoring and shirting, shoes, accessories, jewellery, and sunglasses include vaquero jackets with hand-embroidered metallic cuivre florals, fine-tailored dungarees, the LV Texan boot with Western bootmaker Goodyear in Texas, cowboy hats in leather with belt-buckle hatbands, jewellery constructed in genuine turquoise, a fine silver link chain in supersized dimension, and finally, carbon fibre Millionaire sunglasses. The Top 10 Biggest Sex Trends of 2024

0

Just as the fashion and beauty industries notice various trends coming in each year, so too does the sexual wellness industry. We can observe different sexual behaviours, interests and technology come into popularity each year, reflecting where our mindset as a collective is. Overall, we tend to be getting more and more open and expressive when it comes to sexuality these days and more people are willing to explore their wild side in new and interesting ways.

We’re checking in with our in-house expert Eleanor Hadley and industry experts from LoveHoney Group alongside data provided by adult film website Pornhub, to get a firm grasp on the year’s biggest sex trends.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Advancements in AI
  • 2. Virtual Reality and Sex Robots
  • 3. Sexual Literacy
  • 4. Audio Erotica
  • 5. Open Relationships
  • 6. Holistic Sexuality
  • 7. Outercourse
  • 8. Conversation Card Games
  • 9. Age is Just a Number

1. Advancements in AI

If there’s one thing that the Pornhub Year in Review taught us, it’s that AI is here to stay in the sex world. The adult film website saw searches for “android” grow by 1689% last year and we expect that trend to continue. However, we’ve also seen advancements in the physical world with sexual wellness brand, LoveHoney, leveraging AI technology to create the world’s first images of a real-life orgasm. They expect this technology to make its way into their sex toys shortly too, specifically the use of AI algorithms to create personalised experiences that adapt to an individual’s preferences.

“There is so much potential for customisation with the help of AI. It allows us to interpret data and craft individual responses based on sensory feedback, like body temperature and pulse, to fit the user’s needs. For example, future sex toys could recognise whether you are having an orgasm and then learn from your behaviour whether it should increase or decrease the intensity,” said Fabian Schmolck, Lovehoney Group’s Emerging Technology Expert.

Experts at LoveHoney also expect people to continue to use chatbots as a safe and anonymous way to ask questions they otherwise might keep to themselves. “AI companion apps like Blush and Replika provide human-like interaction to users who can develop real friendships, emotional and romantic connections, and practice communication skills, boundary setting, vulnerability and flirting. These skills can then be used to interact in social settings, and workplaces, navigate dating apps and foster meaningful relationships in real life,” said sexologist Christine Rafe.

Sex Robot
Pornhub indicates that searches for “robots” e.g. “sex robots” and “3D robots” grew by more than 300% last year | Image: Eduardo Contreras/San Diego Union Tribune

2. Virtual Reality and Sex Robots

Virtual reality has already revolutionised sex with the vast majority of adult film websites offering VR videos for use with speciality gear. Furthermore, data from the leading-website Pornhub indicates that searches for “robots” e.g. “sex robots” and “3D robots” grew by more than 300% last year. The trend is here to stay

At the same time, 3D printing has an exciting trajectory for the sex toy industry with fully personalised vibrators printed straight from home set to become a reality over the next decade. Meanwhile, sex robots are predicted to replace sex dolls as they become fully reactive and responsive to touch and feel.

3. Sexual Literacy

Sexual wellness entered the mainstream last year and people are finally recognising the importance of a healthy sex life. We’re now actively seeking out sex education. It’s a refreshing shift that has created more safety, pleasure and communication skills overall. Many sexual wellness brands, businesses and educators like our very own in-house expert Eleanor Hadley have in-person and online workshops, courses and masterclasses on a whole host of topics.

With the normalisation of sexual wellness, Hadley is predicting that being sexually literate will become – for lack of a better word – sexy. With open conversations about the newest things you’ve learnt and perhaps in-person workshops even popping up as a popular date idea.

“It’s a pretty well-accepted fact that our high school sex education was more than lacking, leaving most people ill-equipped to navigate sex and pleasure to their full potential,” she said. “In the last five or so years of working in the sexuality space, I’ve noticed a huge change in cultural attitudes towards sex. What used to draw embarrassed looks of shock or horror to the simple question ‘So, what do you do?‘ now receives a much more understanding response.”

Make no mistake, this year is one where sex is at the front of everyone’s mind, thanks to our overall cultural shift towards openness and acceptance. It’s a great time to explore your sexuality and try new things.

Audio erotica is a much more creative and refined iteration of the classic phone sex hotlines | Image: Sennheiser

4. Audio Erotica

Who even watches regular porn anymore? In the past few years, we’ve seen a boom in the erotica industry with the introduction of audio porn. A much more creative and refined iteration of the classic phone sex hotlines, apps like Dipsea and Quinn are leading the way in audio erotica, much to (predominantly) women’s delight.

For those of us with a typically responsive desire type as opposed to spontaneous (like the majority of men), listening to porn is the perfect way to build arousal. The audio erotica trend showcases either scripted scenarios with voice actors, or creator-generated scenes using fantasy and role play. Paired with sexy voices and plenty of moaning, audio erotica transports you into scenarios that you’ve dreamed about and immerses you in that world, if only for 20 minutes or so.

With the rise in popularity, we’re seeing audio creators build a following and gain notoriety. After the success of Quinn’s original series with actor Thomas Doherty, we’re anticipating we’ll see more celebrities jumping on the bandwagon.

5. Open Relationships

The past few years have seen a closer examination of monogamy and traditional relationship structures, with many people opening up to explore new dynamics in dating and partnerships. Many people have tried exploring open relationships, polyamory and other styles of non-monogamy with varying results. People are realising that there are so many different ways to be in relationships that are vastly different to what we’re accustomed to.

Sometimes called ‘relationship sabbaticals’ the experts at LoveHoney believe this trend is on the rise and can lead to a healthy long-term relationship. “If done with clear communication and agreement around intentions and boundaries, relationship sabbaticals can foster self-reflection and growth both personally and interpersonal,” said Lovehoney Group sexologist Christine Rafe.

“Healthy long-term relationships rely on a balance of separateness and togetherness, with the separateness providing self-identity, agency and independence, and the togetherness providing an anchor of support, stability and human connection.”

With open relating comes a need to level up your communication skills, which is a huge plus. For those already in relationships, swinging is making a comeback – but not in the old-school keys-in-a-punch-bowl style. We’re expecting an uptick in luxe swinger parties for those couples wanting to explore the sexual fantasy of inviting someone (or several someones) into the bedroom, but not necessarily the relationship.

Image 3
Couples are taking a ‘less is more’ approach to sex | Image: Unsplash

6. Holistic Sexuality

On the flip side of non-monogamy is the idea of holistic sexuality where couples take a ‘less is more’ approach to sex. Let’s not forget for a second that pleasure (alongside old-fashioned love) is the underlying factor for sexual satisfaction. It’s a simple equation to get your head around, the more pleasurable a sexual experience is, the more likely a person will be satisfied after engaging in the experience.

“Sex is inherently an emotional experience and we do both ourselves and our sexual partners a disservice
when we view sex as simply physical. Try as some people might to separate sex from emotions, I’m an
advocate for incorporating and integrating our emotions into our sexual experiences. I think this makes sex better and more pleasurable,” said Cam Fraser, Lovehoney Group sexologist.

Image 2
Non-penetrative sex is having it’s iPhone moment | Image: Unsplash

7. Outercourse

Penetrative sex is so last year… seriously, outercourse is in people and we’re looking forward to more consistent orgasms because of it. “Some definitions of outercourse might say it is specifically genital touch that is non-penetrative, but I like to define outercourse as more of a whole-person experience,” says expert Christine Rafe.

“Where we might have historically called non-penetrative touch ‘foreplay’, this insinuates that non-penetrative activities are less important than penetrative, and follows a linear view that sees penis in vagina penetration as the goal of what sex ‘should’ be, which is only true for reproductive purposes.”

Rosewells love deeply deck

8. Conversation Card Games

About as simple of a sex trend as you’ll find. Conversation card games are a fun and simple way to bring some excitement back into the bedroom according to our experts. “As a result of extended periods of isolation over the past few years, I’ve noticed that societally we’re becoming more aware of the importance of real, deep connection,” said Eleanor Hadley. “Many people are no longer content with surface-level relationships and are craving depth and intimacy. This is where conversation card games, like Sex Talk or Rosewell’s Love Deeply Deck, come in.

“These types of tools invite you to open up emotionally and sexually to a lover to cultivate a connection and I predict you’ll be seeing card decks as a fixture on many bedside tables this year,” she said.

Mid life couple
It’s men who need to think about their sexual health and how it changes as they get older | Image: Unsplash

9. Age is Just a Number

Our population is aging but that hasn’t stopped older Australians from having plenty of sex and we expect that to continue this year. According to a recent global survey conducted by Lovehoney Group, the average libido ranking of people 55 years or older is only 19% lower than that of people 54 years and younger.

At the same time, it’s men who need to think about their sexual health and how it changes as they get older. “Physiologically, older men might notice a decrease in libido, longer time needed to achieve erection, less firm erections, and potentially longer periods required for recovery between sexual activities. These changes are often influenced by declining testosterone levels, as well as other health conditions like cardiovascular disease or diabetes, and the side effects of certain medications,” explains Lovehoney Group sexologist Cam Fraser.

Promescent lube
Promescent Lube | Image: Promescent

10. Lube is Coming Back

During the pandemic, an abundance of new lube brands hit the market but most people seem to have forgotten that bottle sitting in their draw. According to Hadley, couples and singles realised the advantages of lube at the time, but need a little more encouragement to get back into the swing of things this year.

“We’ve seen a lot more discourse and education about the benefits of lube lately – especially the concept of ‘arousal non-concordance’, and many folks are shedding the taboo that lube “isn’t necessary” and embracing just how much it can enhance pleasure for all.”

Sneaker News #99 – Nike and Off-White Drop a Nostalgic Hiking Boot

Welcome to Sneaker News #99. This week, Nike and Off-White are continuing to honour Virgil Abloh’s legacy with another collab that this time turns its attention to the hiking boot aesthetic. If you’re looking for a more traditional silhouette though, Travis Scott has put his spin on the Nike Attack. And, if you’re not keen on Scott’s Cactus Jack logos, there is another Nike Attack release with a cleaner look. Elsewhere, there are new drops from Fucking Awesome and adidas and Teddy Santis with New Balance. Check it all out below.

Drawing inspiration from Nike’s late ’80s and early ’90s aesthetics, Off-White transforms the hiking boot into luxury statement. A pop of colour on the tongue is thematically carried across to the eye-catching box. Nike will have these for sale on 19th December.

Things to Consider for Fitness Gifts

When it comes to fitness gift ideas, simply wrapping a bow on a new water bottle isn’t quite enough (although we’d all love that). In fact, if you want to get the special occasion right, there are a few things you need to consider:

  • Price: Perhaps the most obvious consideration, the price will inevitably play a factor in your purchasing decision. While you may want to splash out for a significant birthday or gifting event, more often than not, you’ll be aiming around the $50-$100 mark for most gifts. In the fitness world, however, gifts don’t exactly come cheap. To get the most out of your gift idea, don’t be afraid to shop around for the best price.
  • Sports: Fitness lovers are notoriously sport loyal, so before you set off and buy your special someone a new accessory, make sure it fits their code. Buy an NRL man a new Swans jersey and he may never speak to you again.

The Biggest Fitness Trends for 2023, As Predicted By Experts

If you picked up a pickleball paddle, laced up on inline skates for the first time since your teens, or went on a hot girl walk in the last year, congratulations — you took part in some of 2022’s biggest fitness trends, and you likely have some fun memories to show for it. But as the year winds down, it’s time to start looking forward to what will move you in the future. Here’s what experts are predicting to be the biggest fitness trends of 2023, and what you need to know about the workouts, recovery methods, training styles, and more you’ll be seeing.

1. Virtual Reality Workouts

Ambling through an IRL workout in a drab basement gym is so last year. In 2023, virtual reality (VR) workouts will become mainstream as these high-tech headsets and devices grow more widespread (the augmented reality and VR product and services industry is expected to grow to $80.6 billion by 2029, and Apple is rumored to be releasing a VR headset in 2023). Meanwhile, software companies continue to add new apps that make working out feel like a game. From slashing music notes in Beat Saber to climbing mountains in The Climb app, VR workouts have gotten a major upgrade (both in terms of graphics and the physical challenge) as of late.

Start your VR workout journey with the Meta Quest 2, one of the more affordable VR headsets on the market. It pairs seamlessly with Supernatural, an app that offers gamified total-body workouts that take you to picturesque, hyper-realistic locations.

In addition to all the workout varieties that already make up a well-balanced fitness routine (think: strength training, cardio, and low-impact workouts), one of the biggest 2023 fitness trends is further emphasis on prioritizing mobility training. Mobility training is working to improve your ability to safely move a muscle or muscle group through a range of motion within a joint. And it’s about so much more than just being flexible. Developing your mobility helps improve functional movement, prevent injuries, reduce pain, and more. And since being sedentary can lead to more injuries and muscle dysfunction, mobility training will be crucial for making sure your joints are fully functional and you’re able to move pain-free. After all, if you don’t regularly use your muscles in their full range of motion, you risk losing that ability to move smoothly and without pain, Clinton Lee, P.T. D.P.T., C.S.C.S., previously told Shape.

And while mobility is totally different from flexibility (mobility is your ability to move a muscle or muscle group through a range of motion, while flexibility is your connective tissues’ ability to temporarily lengthen) stretching is also primed to have a major moment in 2023. In fact, you can expect to see prioritizing post-workout recovery (through stretching, low-impact activity, and yes, those high-tech massage guns) as another form of self-care next year. Case in point: Pinterest has seen a boost in searches around phrases such as mobility stretches, knee mobility exercises, and hip mobility exercises.

3. Posture Workouts

As more people experience the side effects of weak postural muscles (think: tech neck, dowager’s hump), they’re seeking exercises to improve posture for a comfortable, pain-free daily life. The antidote to WFH life, posture workouts train and strengthen the muscles that support your spine (such as the erector spinae, transverse abdominis, and pelvic floor) and lumbopelvic hip complex (your lumbar spine, pelvis, and hips), which are key in keeping you upright.

4. Primal Movement

Another one of Pinterest’s most-predicted 2023 fitness trends, primal movement refers to the movements humans have been doing naturally for hundreds — even thousands — of years, such as crawling, lunging, reaching, pushing, and more. Forget the complicated exercises that don’t have any basis in real-life movements (after all, have you ever seen someone do a Turkish get-up outside of a workout?). Instead, think of primal movement as a subcategory of functional training — aka training your body to perform the moves necessary for daily life. Get in on the trend, which is really more of a back-to-basics approach rather than a timely fad, by adding squats, deadlifts, bear crawls, and farmer carries to your workouts.

5. Standing Abs Workouts

Keep your yoga mat rolled up — the latest trend in abs exercises has you on your feet. Standing abs workouts are becoming more popular (just check out the #standingabs hashtag on TikTok, which has more than 22.7 million views), and it’s no surprise why. After all, working your core while upright brings different benefits than your traditional sit-ups and crunches. This includes improving posture more effectively than supine (lying face up) movements, engaging more muscle groups (think: glutes, lower back muscles, and even your upper body muscles), and preventing injuries related to pore balance, as Shape previously reported. You can add kettlebells or dumbbells to challenge your core even further. Plus, standing core workouts can be more accessible for people with bigger chests (and way more comfortable, too). Try this standing abs workout to get a head start on this 2023 fitness trend.

6. Exercise as a Mental Health Tool

The last few years have been difficult — to put it mildly — and it’s become key to find ways to prioritize mental health and self-care. While facials and bubble baths definitely count as rest and recovery, more and more people are turning to movement as a way to protect and enhance their mental health. After all, exercise has been proven to reduce stress, help with depression and anxiety, improve sleep, and even improve brain function. But even aside from the proven physical benefits of working out, next year you’ll continue to see people using exercise as a way to connect with others, enjoy much-needed alone time, work toward personal goals, and build confidence, all of which are crucial in maintaining mental health.

On a similar note, finding a form of exercise that you actually look forward to doing just adds joy to your life — plain and simple. Instead of forcing yourself to power through a grueling HIIT session, it’s time to reject any pressure that makes you feel like you have to exercise a certain way for it to “count.” Instead, a big fitness trend for 2023 is all about moving in a way that will make both your body and brain feel good. So whether you live for a cardio dance class or the thrill of hitting a punching bag non-stop, finding a way to exercise that you love goes a long way in feeling your best.

Who Needs Louis Vuitton’s $2,400 Horizon Light Up Earphones? SMH

0

It’s time to kick those shoddy-looking earphones to the curb and switch to something more lavish. The third-generation Louis Vuitton Horizon Light Up earphones are here to deliver a high-quality listening experience with a whiff of high fashion. The Maison’s latest wireless earphones join the rapidly expanding list of other Horizon devices like smartwatches and speakers, becoming part of an “ecosystem of beautifully crafted, high-end connected objects.” Louis Vuitton‘s latest generation of earphones is a rare and exclusive breed of high-end audio products that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, blending ingenious and exceptional craftsmanship with seamless wireless technology.

According to the brand, these wireless earphones are crafted out of a lightweight aluminium frame for utmost comfort and ease. The curved Tambour shape of the earphones draws inspiration from the iconic Louis Vuitton Tambour watch case, helping these stand out from the crowd while also adding to the overall design language and tone. These are finished with a spheroidal layer of polished sapphire that rests over flowers from the Louis Vuitton Connected Monogram pattern. The Louis Vuitton Horizon Light Up earphones come in five different and vibrant colour patterns, out of which three belong to the standard collection, while the other two are limited editions only available at launch.

The standard collection includes the classic matt black with gunmetal details, a warm shade of yellow gold, and a satiny, easygoing blend of cherry blossom pink and rose gold. On the other hand, the limited editions come in an upbeat red and regal yellow gold, introduced to honour the Lunar New Year, and in shining steel with a foxy violet and blue gradient colour design. Also arriving with these is an exquisite-looking charging case, sporting the same curved Tambour outline as the earphones.

The charging case is adorned with Louis Vuitton’s Connected Monogram pattern that’s illuminated by LEDs. As per the high-end fashion brand, these “animate in a beautiful kaleidoscope of gradient colours, performing an electric dance while indicating battery levels.” Once this electro-light exhibit has ended, three lights stay on, displaying the case and earphones’ battery status.

Bundled with the package is a smart and practical on-the-go secondary travel case. This case features a pair of see-through clear glass holes on the top, teasing the Monogram pattern of the earphones in their full glory. The case is fitted with a snap hook and can be easily hooked to a belt loop or bag. The main purpose of this second case is to help users carry their earphones around in a secure and chic manner. Similar to the charging case and earphones, the travel case is decked with the Louis Vuitton Monogram pattern and even boasts a magnetised closing mechanism.

Louis Vuitton Horizon Light-Up Earphones | Image: Louis Vuitton

Looks and style aside, the Louis Vuitton Horizon Light Up earphones are no slouch when it comes to delivering high-quality audio and sound. The manufacturer partnered with the world’s leading audio experts at Master & Dynamic to help nail that perfect sound. The earphones even offer wide frequency response for vibrant and balanced sound restitution and deliver superior levels of Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation. These earphones instantly turn on when placed in the ear and are activated by a wear sensor. In terms of controls and buttons, the right earphone features a multi-function button for pausing, skipping tracks and answering calls. The left pair comes with buttons to adjust volume and noise control modes.

The claimed battery life on these is 28 hours, which is theoretically sufficient for even the most hard-core of users/listeners. A bonus feature here is the Bluetooth multipoint support, allowing you to connect two devices simultaneously. The earphones even have the ‘Ping my earphones’ feature, which when enabled produces a sound to help you easily locate them. The feature can be enabled via the accompanying Louis Vuitton Connect companion application, which is compatible with both iOS and Android.

Louis Vuitton’s foray into the technology sector isn’t new and these earphones definitely build upon the previous generations, presenting users with a much more refined, stylish and powerful pair of earphones that’s nothing like anything present on the market right now. However, with an exorbitant price tag of AUD$2,440, the Louis Vuitton Horizon Light Up earphones are not meant for the faint-hearted. If you are in the mood to treat yourself to one of these and can somehow justify such a hole-burning price, you can get them via Louis Vuitton’s official web store now.

What Emotional Intelligence Actually Means

0

photo by jd mason courtesy of Shape

Whether through social media accounts dedicated to mental health or The Bachelorette, you’ve probably heard the term “emotional intelligence” (EI). Still, you might not be 100 percent clear on what, exactly, it means to be emotionally intelligent.

In a nutshell, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, manage, and express your own emotions, and to understand the emotions of others and respond to them in a healthy, productive way. Granted, that’s a simplification of a concept that psychologists have shaped over the span of decades. Keep reading for a more thorough emotional intelligence definition, plus details on how it can affect your relationships.

What Is Emotional Intelligence?

The concept of emotional intelligence stems from the argument that IQ isn’t an exhaustive measurement of intelligence. “There was a psychologist, Howard Gardner from Harvard, who questioned the validity of a single IQ score based mainly on math and language skills,” says Jaelline Jaffe, Ph.D., a psychotherapist and co-author of The Language of Emotional Intelligence. “In 1976, he came up with seven different types of intelligences (multiple intelligences theory), [which were] later expanded to nine types.”

In 1995, psychologist and science journalist, Daniel Goleman, came along with his own theory of emotional intelligence, which incorporates two of Gardner’s types of intelligences: interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences. According to Goleman, there are four fundamental aspects of emotional intelligence, as listed in his book Emotional IntelligenceWhy It Can Matter More Than IQ.

Self-Awareness

In general, self-awareness is being in tune with who you are, understanding your behavior, and recognizing where you need work. Self-awareness goes beyond just being aware of your personality. “It’s also an awareness of how you’re acting in a given moment (or moments) and how others are perceiving you and those actions,” Courtney Glashow, L.C.S.W., founder of Anchor Therapy LLC, previously told Shape.

Self-Management

Emotional intelligence isn’t just about whether you’re in tune with your emotions, but also whether you’re able to express them in a healthy and appropriate way, aka self-management. This means “being objective to your emotions and having the ability to self-regulate heightened emotions that may arise to produce an effective and appropriate-to-context emotional response,” says Jaime Zuckerman, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist. In other words, people who possess self-management aren’t flying off the handle when things don’t go their way, but keeping their emotions on an even keel.

Of course, being able to stay calm when you receive devastating news is no easy task, but an emotionally intelligent person has a grasp on how to best handle and voice their emotions.

Social Awareness

No matter what you do in life, having a strong set of social skills is crucial, and they factor into your emotional intelligence. “Social skills require the ability to be objective to social interactions including the emotional responses of others,” says Zuckerman.

Part of being socially aware is possessing empathy. Empathy allows you to step into someone else’s shoes, putting yourself in their situation and understanding it from their perspective. (

Relationship Management

The fourth element of emotional intelligence deals with your ability to manage relationships, i.e. the ability to form and cultivate connections with others. This applies to your relationships with friends and family and your interactions in the workplace. People with relationship management abilities are able to handle conflict, saying “what [they] have to say, clearly and strongly, and in a way the other person can hear,” Goleman wrote in Harvard Business Review.

Someone who has a low emotional intelligence won’t be willing to talk things out. “They quickly become defensive,” says Zuckerman. “[They] lack empathy and awareness of how their behaviors impact those around them, [and] will take little accountability for [their actions] and frequently blame others.”

How Emotional Intelligence Can Affect Relationships

Emotional intelligence plays a role in all interpersonal relationships, but especially romantic relationships, according to Jaffe. “Emotional intelligence is the basis for people to share their deep emotions in a healthy way, for their partners to support them in doing so, and for conflicts to be resolved in a manner that fosters growth and respect for all parties,” she says.

When both parties in a relationship lack emotional intelligence, they typically don’t form a deep, meaningful connection, says Zuckerman. “They don’t share their emotions, have difficulty regulating them and have limited ability to empathize or recognize the emotional needs of others,” she says. “However, if neither partner is seeking these qualities in a relationship, they can in a way, co-exist in the relationship at a superficial level.”

As for when only one person has emotional intelligence skills, “for one thing that person is more likely to seek a partner who can relate at that level,” in the first place, says Jaffe. “If not, they may be seeing themselves as a savior or rescuer to the other. That often becomes a steep and slippery slope to navigate. If the person has a strong sense of self and is able to sustain that in the face of great difficulty, they may be able to carry the relationship or adequately influence the other person to learn and grow.”

How To Find Out Your Emotional Intelligence

You can use the four points above as sort of a checklist for a general sense of how emotionally intelligent you are. “You are an emotionally intelligent person if you are able to manage and control your emotions, have self-awareness, are attuned to other people’s emotions, and able to acknowledge emotions without reacting emotionally,” says Natalie Jones, Psy.D., licensed psychotherapist, owner of Lifetime Counseling and Consulting, and host of A Date With Darkness Podcast. “It’s being willing and open to discuss problems in the relationship, and the ability to reflect on behavior.”

Wondering where you stand? “There are specific psychological measures that can be used to assess one’s emotional intelligence,” says Zuckerman. “They consist of either self-report or assessment of one’s emotional intelligence abilities in a particular situation.” You can take an emotional intelligence test online, but “to truly understand the degree of someone’s emotional intelligence, one would need to evaluate the person’s ability to understand and manage emotions, and how that impacts their behaviors,” says Jones. In other words, meeting with a mental health professional will be the most accurate way to find out where you fall on the emotional intelligence spectrum.

How to Cultivate Emotional Intelligence

It’s important to note that not every relationship with an emotional intelligence imbalance is doomed. You can take steps to improve your emotional intelligence whether you’re in a relationship or just generally interested in improving your life.

“As with any other skill, people have varying degrees of living out their experience with these skills, and can continue to learn and evolve over their lifespan,” says Jaffe. Seeking professional help is an option. “Individual therapy or couples counseling often plays a significant part in developing these skills,” says Jaffe. “Ideally, both people in the relationship learn and utilize the basic skills of emotional intelligence.” (
