Arriving in its first collection with eight pieces to choose from Mr West, 44, teamed up with Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia to co-design products for Gap, including a $240 black hoodie ($480 AUD) that sold out minutes after launching. The same cannot be said for other pieces in the collection, namely the denim pants, jacket, and cotton t-shirts that are sitting on the Yeezy Gap site at the time of writing.
In a January interview with Vogue, Gvasalia was questioned about his collaboration with Ye, stating, “there’s a certain urban minimalism and poetry in our aesthetics, also a desire to push boundaries.”
Adding, “There are very few people that I know, especially of Ye’s calibre, who really understand my work so well. He makes me come out of my comfort zone and be a better designer. There’s no ego when we collaborate, just a mutual drive to evolve and do something great and new.”
Each piece in the collection features a GAP Logo front and centre, an oversize Balenciaga cut, drop shoulders, and mushroom cut lower hem. The pieces benefit from a white dove motif on the back, in a press release obtained by PEOPLE magazine, the motif is said to suggest “an unnamed hope for the future.”
